HANDICANE: A product, A project, A competition!

“See a need, fill a need” Robots (2005)

A product does need to serve a need. However, the more important and urgent the need, the more vital the product. Over the past decades, product innovators and market producers have neglected elderly people (people over the age of 65) as a market segment due to the fact that they only represent 5% of the population of Egypt. That is why we decided to “see” their needs and “fill” them!

After conducting needs analysis surveys, we came to the conclusion that the main problem that old aged people face, is that they usually need someone around to assist them with their simple daily tasks especially if it’s difficult for them to move a lot. For example, they usually need someone to get them their medicine or tissues; they forget where they put their cell phones or when their medicine was due. And most importantly, when they’re alone at home and they need to contact someone in case of an emergency but can’t reach the phone. But what if the solution to these problems was right there at their fingertips?

What if their walking cane could have a drawer for their pills?

What if it can remind them when their medicine was due with a small alarm?

What if it had a small pouch to carry important things such as their cell phone?

What if it had a flash light to light their way when the lights go out?

What if their cane could alert someone in an emergency?

What if their cane had all that?

This is why we present them with HANDICANE©, where the walking cane has several small slots. Each of these slots could accommodate one of the above modules; and the customer could decide on the modules that he/she needs. For example, if someone has a problem with misplacing their things, they could buy the modules with the small pouch and the small pillbox; and these modules will be with him all the time without taking much space.

But most importantly, in case of emergency where the person needs to call for help but can’t move that easily, all he has to do is press a button on a fitted GPRS module on his cane that would send an S.M.S. to a relative informing him of the emergency as well as his location.

In that case, this walking cane will not only make the lives of the elderly easier…

HANDICANE© can save their lives.
